March 2011

I would love to come here and update more often, that’s one of the things I want to try this year. So I’ll start with twice a month, then I’ll see if I can publish a post once a week. I think that’s as far as I’ll get, there is no way I can come up with something to say every single day. There’s tons of bloggers out there if your looking for daily posts, lol!

I wanted to post some of the pictures from our little trip to Utah. Every time we have some vacation time we go back to Utah, well not this year! We’re planning on a trip to Portland to visit our friend Kelly, another trip to Disneyland and the grand finale: we’re going to Argentina! You guys, I am so freaking excited to go back it’ll be 11 years since I left my country and I miss it! I miss my brother sis in law too.  December can’t come too soon!

Sledding

Dallas loooves sledding! The first time we tried it was when we went to Tahoe and he had a blast, so of course we had to find a hill while in Utah. Too bad that week it barely snowed!

with my sis in law Mekinzie

She gave us some Torani so we could make Italian sodas. I got a couple more since then because they’re so good!

build a snowman - check!

The only part the kids were interested to was to pose next to the snowman Ben built. While he made it both Dallas and his cousin Matthew kept throwing snowballs at each other, silly boys!

Primos

With my cousins Alfredo, Alicia and Jimena, she has 3 little boys now, they’re adorable. 2 of them were not in the picture. Well, a lot of people were missing, haha!

Kiki and me

That girl is the latest addition to the Librandi clan. Kiki (or Christine) is marrying Nicolas in less than 2 months. She is awesome and I’m so happy to call her my sis in law.

Dallas and Uncle Nico

The three of us took him sledding right before we left, he had a great time. I love to see my brother play with Dallas they get along so well I wish we lived closer so they could play all the time. Maybe it will become reality next year!

I have more but I will probably post them on Facebook. Yesterday was our day off so we went for a walk around Muir Woods, I love that place, the redwoods are huge and it’s so peaceful and beautiful.

We also took Dallas to the movies we saw Rango. Really cute movie, when we got back home and put him in bed we kept hearing him play and make the voices of the characters of the movie. So cute.

Howdy

Hey… whoever is still clicking on a link to this blog… probably my friend Andrea (hi girl!) and my lovely sis in law (hi Amy!)

I was not planning on taking a long vacation from blogging, yet, I did. So what did I do all these months? Let’s see… sometimes, I did too much. You guys, I’ve been so stressed lately, which is probably why I got so sick this past weekend (along with husband and kiddo, we were a sight to see, I tell you what!)

We are settled in our little place. It’s nice to have free laundry, D has kids to play with, there’s a backyard, and other stuff I mentioned on my last post about this. The commute to work sucks, and part of the big stress was work, still is, since I haven’t changed jobs. I am changing shifts, I will be working during the day so I can spend nights with my guys, I hope things work out a little better. I had my hopes really high for a really good paying  job that didn’t pan out and I was very disappointed, but it wasn’t meant to be.

I finished taking a class for CNAs called Acute care, which prepares you to work in a hospital environment. That was another huge stress, we had to juggle my schedule with Ben’s schedule and thankfully the mom from upstairs has been awesome when I needed someone to watch D. Now that that’s over I can breathe a little more.

Ben started a class to help him prepare for the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) it’s still surreal that he’s preparing to one day become a doctor, he’ll be a great one too, I know it. He’s really stressed about the amount of studying that test requires and I know that it’s probably nothing compared to the amount of stuff he’ll have to cram once he gets to Med school. Poor guy, I want to help him somehow, but I suppose doing  housework and contributing to our finances will have to do for now. Gosh, I hope I didn’t sound sarcastic, because I wasn’t being sarcastic at all, I know he appreciates what I do around the house.

I’m excited because 1. my younger brother is engaged! He’s been dating this really nice girl, and I couldn’t be happier for them! And 2. we’re heading back to Utah at the end of this month for a few days. Good food and good people! We need a little break before May, which is when Ben takes this beast of a test.

What else…  we bought an iPad, which is such an awesome device. If you don’t have one and don’t know the awesomeness that it is, go to the Apple website and check it out.

On anniversaries and birthdays… December was the rough month, of course. I missed him a lot those days, more than usual, but it was so nice to have family and friends think of us on those days, some of our family members even went to visit his grave on the 21st and that really touched me. 4 years is too long, he would have been 6 years old now… I can’t picture him that old and yet, sometimes I want to, I would love to see what he would look like as an older little boy with that crazy hair and those beautiful big eyes and long eyelashes…

That’s about it for now, I don’t think I have any recent photos, if I upload some more to this computer I’ll come back and post.

Moving again

Yep, seems like the Alvords have ants on their butts (Argentina idiom) and can’t stay in one place for very long. Starting this weekend we will start moving to a city on the East Bay called San Pablo, about 15 miles north of San Francisco.

We didn’t want to leave really, given that Ben has zero commute to work and mine is 20 mins away, but the rent here is killing us slowly. We would like to use some of our hard earned money on other things like other bills (I bet you were thinking I was going to say weekly trips to Disneyland or something fun, ha!) and saving some money. Hey, this kid needs to get a higher education, although by looking at the things he plays with he’ll probably end up manning a garbage truck when he grows up. He loves to dump things into containers. Liquids sometimes, which I’m not very amused by it.

Anyway! Yes, moving. One of Ben’s coworkers has a house that has a little apartment downstairs. Separate entrance and all. Bonus: cheaper by a few hundred dollars, 2 bedrooms, bigger kitchen and a backyard. Also! This couple has 2 kids close to Dallas age, so he’ll have friends to play with all the time. Pros all around.

So we lived in San Francisco for 2 years. We loved it, we also wished we lived closer to the city, but we’ll come back, eventually. We still have many moves ahead of us, so SF is not rid of us yet.

See you soon San Fran!

Latest read

I’m always looking for a medicine related book and this one is even better because is from a nurse’s perspective. I like they way she writes, and I was touched by some of the stories. She also has a website, Theresa Brown RN

The Summer of George!

Since Ben has a few weeks without school we made a list of things we wanted to get done. We are big Seinfeld fans, so we named our summer: The Summer of George! (SoG for short ;) )

Here are a few things that we have planned:

  • Giants game
  • Utah
  • Yosemite
  • Disneyland
  • Camp at Kirby Cove
  • 1/2 marathon (that one applies to Ben only, D and I will be cheering him from the sides)
  • Redwoods
  • Farmers Markets
  • Sticker factory/Jelly Belly Factory

So far we’ve crossed off Utah and some farmers markets, I’ll let you know what else we cross off this coming weekend. How about you? How’s your summer going?

My Life List: Sparklers with Ben and Dallas

We just got back from a little vacation in Utah. We spent a few days visiting friends and family, meeting a new niece, playing Rock Band, attending a demolition derby and me watching Eclipse with my good friend Angi. We had a great time.

In between those things, I was able to accomplish one of my things from my Life List. We lit some sparklers and we had some fun with them. Dallas enjoyed them, and we enjoyed watching him play with them. It’s the little things, right?

Life List - Sparklers

Happy 4th!

And she never came

I have been thinking about this for a long time, probably since I learned that my first child would be a boy.

After we had Conner and got pregnant the second time I hoped with all my heart that the baby would be a girl. How awesome would that be! We already had a name that worked for both a boy and a girl, I was already daydreaming of the beautiful dresses she would wear, the way I would do her hair every morning and as she got older start worrying about the kind of boys she would date. But when it was time to find out we learned we were having another boy.  See, I have quite a few friends and family and lots of other moms I know who have a boy and a girl. And when I first learn that they’re having a boy and they already have a girl and vice versa, and can’t help but be jealous and disappointed and never be entirely happy for them.

After doctors found out what the exact diagnose was, they took a blood sample from everyone in our family and we got tested for it. Genetics is very complicated, but basically Ben and I are silent carriers of the disease, Conner was fully carrier and Dallas is a non-carrier. Every time we have a baby there is a 25% chance the baby will have what Conner had. After much consideration we decided we couldn’t do that to another child knowing what we know now.  Of course modern medicine offers different options, like separating the cells and identifying the genes that would cause the disorder and remove them (or something like that, told you genetics is complicated!)  but we didn’t want to go down that route or any other.

And so at 26, I had my last baby. And he was boy. She never came.

It was not an easy decision to make and I was very sad for a long time, but I’ve come to terms with it. For the most part. We talked about adoption and perhaps that will happen sometime in the future, but Ben will start Med School (if everything goes great) in about a year and a half and I would like to concentrate in my career in Nursing when Dallas starts his own school.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my sons with all of my heart, I can’t imagine my life without them but it feels like I’ve been cheated out of the experience of having a daughter. Who knows why that happened, and hopefully as the years go by I’ll stop feeling this way. But for now, this is how I feel.

So proud

Ben started taking Pre med classes back in January. Don’t think I mentioned it before (sorry if I did) but he decided he wants to be a Doctor, and I totally support him. We talked about how hard these next  (7, 10? more?) years are going to be and we’re ready to face the challenge. We’ve been through a lot worse than this. Doesn’t mean I know what’s coming, but we can do it.

So far he’s taken 4 Chemistry classes. He goes to a Chiropractor’s school in San Jose every Saturday and Sunday. These are different than regular classes. They fit a whole semester in 1 month. Every class lasts about 7 hours, and every Saturday he has a test, the last weekend of the month he takes the final. Can you imagine studying that much? Don’t forget he has a full time job and a family to take care of. I honestly do not know how he does it, and gets straight A’s.

So yeah, I’m bragging a little bit about my man. He’s never taken a science class in college (he has a BA) and he is so motivated and disciplined, it’s amazing. I am very proud of him. Next week he starts Physics.

You can do it babe.
